Estelle Gettleman (née Scher; July 25, 1923 – July 22, 2008), known professionally as Estelle Getty, was an American actress and comedian, best known for her portrayal of Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls (1985 – 1992), a role she reprised for appearances on Empty Nest (1993 – 1995), The Golden Palace (1992 – 1993), Blossom (1990–1995), and Nurses (1991 – 1994). Estelle Getty Estelle Getty (Sophia - Golden Girls) - died of complications from Lewy body dementia on July three days before her birthday. She is interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Estelle Getty retired from show business in 2000 after revealing she had Lewy Bodies Dementia.

LOS ANGELES, July 25 (UPI) -- Estelle Getty's son, Carl Gettleman, said Getty's former co-stars from "The Golden Girls" did not attend her funeral in Los Angeles Thursday.
