In January 1955, at age 16, he dropped out of high school to become a professional musician. Also that year, Cochran acquired the guitar he was most closely associated with, a Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins hollow-body. Edward Ray Cochran, called “Eddie Cochran”, was born in October 1938, Minnesota, in the United States.
Perhaps Eddie Cochran’s biggest contribution was as a rock ‘n' roll ambassador to Europe. And Cochran was a guitar hero — he did for rock 'n' roll guitar what Chet Atkins, his hero, did for country guitar. Eddie Cochran was born as Edward Raymond Cochran on October 3, 1938 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The Cochrans moved in 1953 to Bell Gardens, Calif., where Eddie immersed himself in his increasingly adept guitar playing. When Eddie was 14, his parents moved to Bell Gardens, California where he began playing the guitar. In 1954, Eddie joined a local band with songwriter Hank Cochran where Eddie performed as the second vocalist. Cochran was a schoolboy when he began playing the drums, and he soon moved on to teach himself guitar and piano. In 1950, the Cochran family left the Midwest for Bell Gardens, California, and Eddie formed his first band while he was in junior high, playing hillbilly songs with his friends. Very quickly, he showed a deep interest in music, starting getting guitar lessons, playing in a school band and trying to reinterpret songs he heard on the radio. Eddie Cochran was only twenty one when he was killed in a car crash in England, yet his is a legend that burns as bright as only a handful of stars from the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll.
