Altered states of consciousness are numerous and can be intentionally generated in a variety of ways, through specific behaviors, by ingestion of substances, or through cognitive and affective control strategies such as those used in contemplative practice (Tart, 1972). However the methods, functions, and cultural context vary widely between societies.

One major variation is whether societies believe in possession by spirits or in one’s soul fleeing or going on a journey.



Further along the continuum are altered states of consciousness which can lead to dissociation. Many altered states of consciousness are important to our health, such as sleeping and the effect of prescribed medications.
